Innovation program

Accelerating ideas in the biggest logistic company in Latam

THE PROBLEM

The need for the program begins because of the increasing number of intern projects with no budget besides the lack of capacity in operations teams to bring these projects to life.

This is one of the most particular cases in my career and the one I'm most proud of. When I got to Rumo Logistics, the biggest logistic company in Latin America in the middle of 2021.

Acelera, a program of entrepreneurship created by innovation time, was in the second edition.

My challenge was to transform the program into an online experience, for the participants, during the covid 19 pandemic. Besides helping in all processes with materials and managing the event.

When Acelera was about to begin, the teams were already formed, and we needed to start the class modules, which were already planned by another partner company that owned the content. In total 10 teams that stood out will have their projects paid for by the innovation team,

in addition to gaining visibility within the company.

The solution

The project was divided into 5 stages, all of them taught by partner companies. In the middle of each module the participants had to deliver activities so that they could move on to the next stage, the deadline was short, and we had a scheduled closing date, so the teams who ended up missing classes needed to be mentored by me so that everyone could be on the same page.

The modules

The teams

In total there were 10 teams at the beginning, because it was a long-term program, around 2 months, the teams had difficulties in meeting the schedule of activities. I opened my agenda for them so that I could help, and prevent them from deciding to give up. After all, that would bring great visibility to their career within the company. I was able to help the teams, some members ended up giving up, but the teams were still formed. Which gave us more energy.

THE EVENT

Was designed by me with the support of the innovation team. I needed to create the art for the event, such as invitations and presentations. I also needed to create all the promotional material that would be sent to the participants, this kit had a T-shirt from the program, a mug, a notebook, the certificate of participation, as well as a pack of handcrafted coffee. This stage was the most exciting and challenging to build. I had to do the entire production process inside my home, as we were still in the middle of the pandemic. I couldn't go to the company to do this work. My house was full of boxes and paper (which in the future were worth it). And then, with everything ready. I needed to send them to the participants and guests before the final event.

The final event took place on the Zoom platform all teams presented their cases, and the judges and mentors voted based on the criteria established by the innovation team which had performed more during the process and who would bring more savings to the company or reduce costs and prevent risks of accidents.

In the end, after everyone had voted, the company's board decided to award two teams instead of one.

Megalotação and Rota Segura were the winners.

The first case is Megalotação. I had the opportunity to mentor so they wouldn't give up. It consisted of a new spout format for the flow of soy inside the wagon, thus improving the performance of the amount of soy allocated per wagon and reducing the accumulation of dust generated by soy waste. This project made the company stop spending on a spout imported from France, in addition to earning more in the amount of soy delivered to the ports, which would guarantee savings of millions of Reais (Brazilian currency).

THE DELIVERY

After defining the winners and releasing the contribution to fund the project, we went to MT, Rondonópolis, Brazil, at the railway terminal, which handles the entire process from capturing grains delivered by trucks to transporting soybeans in wagons to monitor the implementation of these spouts in the flow of the grains. There we were able to deliver the trophies to the winners and meet them in person, in addition to getting to know the process of the largest railway terminal in Latin America. This certainly was a spectacular experience for me as a designer in construction of an intangible product.
